Pregnancy Time: Nine Months of Pregnancy

First Month of Pregnancy

The doctors do the date of pregnancy by counting the first month from the starting day of the last menstrual period. The date considered is actually prior to the ovulation period has started. This helps the doctor to estimate the due date properly. The fertilization occurs when an egg meets a sperm. The fertilized egg then moves through the fallopian tube and gets itself embedded in the lining of the uterus. Just after that the formation of the chorionic villi takes place. Till the time the placenta is formed and the umbilical cord is developed, the egg yolk does the supportive activity to the baby. During the first month, a large number of developments take place. Within 25 days of fertilization, the heart of the embryo forms and it starts beating. Then, the spinal cord is started to develop. That also occurs during the week four of fertilization. The spinal cord is first formed as a neural nerve; this in the later stage develops in to the spinal cord and the brain of the baby. This stage is very crucial. The mother needs to have a diet full with folic acid; otherwise, the baby's neural nerve may be defective. The major organs are developed in the fifth week.
